The Power of Scripture And The Rhetoric Of Empire
하버드 신학교, 우머니스트 신학 그룹이 페미니스트적 방법으로 성서를 접근할 때 느꼈던 어려움에 대한 기록이다. 여성이 성서의 권위에 어디까지 저항하고 어디까지 스스로에게 해석의 권위를 부여할 수 있는가는 생각보다 어려운 문제다. 권위를 지당한 것으로 받아들이고, 남성적 해석에 아멘으로 응하는 태도와 일종의 멘탈러티가 상상이상으로 매우 깊숙이 뿌리 내리고 있기 때문이다. 조만간 작은 그룹의 여성들과 페미니스트 성서해석을 "함께" 해보는 경험을 하게 될 터인데...어떤 반응과 어떤 난관과 어떤 환희가 있을지...그야말로 우려섞인 기대...
"This led to a discussion of how we feel a sense of great uneasiness at the thought of denying Scriptural authority altogether. For those of us from faith traditions, it was particularly difficult for us to go against what has been deeply ingrained in us. As a group we seemed to have much problems with identifying a text as kyriarchal. But we had even more problems to re-envision the text. This seems to be an ongoing struggle for our group and its members. Giving ourselves the authority to go beyond critiquing, and actually rewriting the text, especially in the sense of reimagining it without "historical facts" to support our ideas. 이는 성서의 권위를 죄다 부인한다는 생각에서 오는 커다란 불편함을 우리가 어떻게 여기는지에 대한 토론으로 이어졌다. 신앙적 전통에서 자란 우리에게는 자신 안에 깊에 새겨진 것에 맞선다는 것이 특히나 어려웠다. 그룹으로서 우리는 본문을 주인지배적(주장제적)이라 규정하는 것에 동의할 수 없는 것 같았다. 그 본문을 다시 상상하고 그려내는 것은 훨씬 더 어려웠다. 이것은 우리 그룹이나 구성원들에게 지속적인 분투가 될 것 같다. 우리의 생각을 지지하고자 "역사적 사실" 없이 그것을 재-상상한다는 의미에서, 우리 자신에게 비판을 넘어서는 권위를 부여하고 실제로 본문을 다시 쓰는 것(은 발버둥치는 노력이 요구된다)."
