고난에 대한 새로운 관점

For centuries women who suffer violence at the hands of husbands, fathers, or other partiarchal figures have been told, supposedly with the authorization of texts such as these, that the only Christian response to their pain is to consider it part of Christ's sufferings and accept it without resistance. Such an interpretation directly contradicts the argument of this letter, which challenges distressed and vulnerable victims of mistreatment to assume a new perspective on this experience that will vindicate their option for Christian faith and enable them to overcome their fear and take on a active role in the face of antagonism. 
수세기에 걸쳐 남편, 아버지 또는 다른 가부장적 인물들에게 폭력을 당한 여성들에게 교회는 (아마도 이런 텍스트의 권위에 기대어) 그들이 당하는 고통에 대한 유일한 그리스도인다운 대응은 그것을 그리스도의 고통의 일부라 여기고 저항하지 말고 받아들이는 것이라 말해왔다. 그러나 이런 해석은 이 편지의 주장을 정면으로 반박하는 것이다. 이 편지는 주류 사회에서 공격의 대상이 되어 괴로워하는 희생자들에게 이 경험에 대해 새로운 관점을 취하라고 도전한다. 고난에 대한 새로운 관점은 그들의 그리스도교 믿음에 대한 선택이 옳았음을 입증해 줄 뿐 아니라 그들을 둘러싼 적개심에 대한 두려움을 극복하고 적극적인 역할을 취하게 한다.
